Steven Olliver struck an extraordinary double hat-trick, as South Lakes men’s 1st XI picked up just their second victory of the season with a 9-2 rout of Fylde 2nd XI last Saturday.

South Lakes were facing the bottom team in Division Three North of the North West League and were able to put some distance between themselves and their fellow strugglers with a ruthless performance.

They were 5-0 up with only 20 minutes played before Fylde defender Pete Latimer was hospitalised after he was struck in the face by a shot from one of the Lakes’ strikers.

The match was halted for 10 minutes while an ambulance was called and a paramedic took him from the pitch.

By the time the final whistle blew, Olliver had scored six times, with the hosts’ other goals coming from Lee Storey, Jamie Riseley and Tom Clements. Alex Horrocks struck both of Fylde’s consolations.

Next up for South Lakes is an away match at Ormskirk on Saturday and they’ll travel down to West Lancashire with their confidence significantly boosted.

It was a more difficult afternoon for the men’s 2nd XI, however, as they were put to the sword 4-0 by Fylde 3rd XI in Division Five North North.

The hosts took the lead when Ollie Holmes struck from close range following a strong run from Pip Munden before the same player struck his second after a smart turn in the circle.

It was 3-0 before half-time when James Smith set up Munden, who claimed his second goal after a good save had denied Holmes his hat-trick.

South Lakes women’s 1st XI were also in action against Fylde, but they were hammered 8-1 at home by their league-leading 2nd XI in the North League Division Two North West.

Lois Viney scored their solitary goal of the afternoon, as their visitors ran riot through goals Sally Livesey (2), Dawn Child, Abbie Allen (2), Hannah Mears (2) and Freya Sharman.
