BARROW Island Ladies are seeking new players to boost their squad as they begin preparations for the 2019 season.

The team, based at Island’s Rating Lane home, play in the second tier of women’s rugby league in this country and compete in the national Challenge Cup as well.

Last season saw Island finish sixth in the Women’s Championship with six wins and eight losses, and reach the quarter-finals of the Challenge Cup, where they were beaten at home to Women’s Super League side York City Knights.

Highlights of the league season included home and away victories over Widnes Vikings, along with a 30-22 win away to eventual champions Stanningley - one of only three defeats the Yorkshire side suffered all season - and a win over third-placed Oulton Raidettes.

Players aged 16 and over are welcome to join the team from those who are new to rugby league to those with previous playing experience.

Training takes place on Tuesday evenings from 6.30pm to 8pm, with matches being played on a Sunday during the season, which is played between April and the end of September.
