King Alfred Bowling Club are able to look back on an exceptional season, with the men’s section winning all three major leagues.

The feat of winning the Furness League First Division, the Ulverston League and the Walney League all in one year had never been achieved by any club before.

As well as being Furness League champions, they have the league merit winner in Barry Lowden, who has achieved this accolade on no less than seven occasions.

Lowden then went on to win the divisional play-offs and also reached the final of the Grand Masters in what was a truly fantastic year.

The Walney top man was Barrow, who just got pipped for the league merit by aggregate points and the best performer in the Ulverston League was young Danny Edmonds, who was only two wins behind the merit winner.

All men’s teams had a successful campaign, as the Furness A team & B teams and the Walney A team held their own within their respective divisions. There were good seasons for Lee Barnard, Ian Pearson and Mike Hool, respectively.

The Senior Citizen Men’s teams also finished high up in their respective divisions, with Jeff Hinde once again leading the way.

The ladies section also had a successful year, winning the Senior Citizens’ league as well as being runners-up in the Afternoon League and the Evening League, while the Afternoon A team staved off relegation.

Glenis McDonald was their star lady, finishing top in all teams. McDonald excelled by winning the Furness League merit and the Senior Ladies merit and was victorious in the Walney Park Open Singles.

Wendy Holmes also had success in winning the Furness League play-offs and Gillian Corran won the Walney League Peter Wilson competition.

Emma Thornton was once again county champion and went on to represent Cumbria at the Champion of Champions at the Waterloo, in Blackpool.

Another success story was 12-year-old Ethan Lowden, who held his own while playing in the First Division and represented the Furness first team twice, winning both games.

Ethan also excelled in the local junior competitions, winning the Joe Wardman Junior Open and the Junior Grand Masters.
