SOUTH Lakes held off hosts Leyland & Chorley to secure a 3-2 win in North Hockey Women’s League Division Two North West.

The visitors made a flying start and were ahead within four minutes when the ball was dribbled into the D and Holly Nuttall slotted past the keeper for the opener.

South Lakes then forced several short corners, but were unable to add to their tally until the 12th minute after Rebecca Cook found Pam Robertson, who fired home on the rebound after her initial effort had been blocked.

Leyland & Chorley got back into the match six minutes later when they managed to score despite the best efforts of the away side to keep them at bay.

It remained 2-1 at half time and South Lakes were quick out of the blocks again when play resumed as they went in search of all three points.

Four minutes into the second half, Cook again proved the provider when she set up Nuttall and although the shot was blocked, the ball fell to Emma Armstrong for her to finish.

At the other end, keeper Gayle Mawdsley deflected away a short corner two minutes from time, only for the home side to be awarded another due to a foul.

At this point, the final whistle blew, but the short corner still had to be taken which Leyland & Chorley scored from to make it 3-2 at full time.

South Lakes are at home this Saturday when they host University of Liverpool (12.30pm).
