Full back Dailon Hernandez scored a hat-trick as Windermere earned their second win of the season in Cumbria Division Two with a 51-5 thrashing of Egremont last Saturday.

The result lifted the hosts up to fifth in the table, just behind Furness on points difference, and it was an afternoon where everything seemed to click, as they ran in eight tries at Dawes Meadow.

The first of these was a spectacular effort from winger Tom Atkinson, who charged away from his own 22 after Windermere won a turnover just a few metres from their own line.

Some poor Egremont handling then led to Neil Piggot making a break down the right and although he was caught, his offload allowed Bobby Davis to score in the corner.

The third try was all down to the forwards, with No.8 and captain Johnny Benson grounding the ball off the back of a powerful five-metre scrum.

Egremont then claimed their solitary score of the afternoon through their left winger before Windermere sealed the bonus point, with flanker Ollie Askew catching the visitors napping.

There was no let-up in the second half, as Benson claimed his second of the game by breaking off a driving maul, following a line-out, that had taken the hosts into Egremont’s 22.

With five tries on the board for his side, Hernandez then took centre stage by first spinning away from a would-be tackler to score down the left wing.

Bertie Hodgson, who kicked four conversions and a penalty during the game, then timed his pass to perfection to allow Hernandez to charge through a gap and go in under the posts.

Hernandez then completed his hat-trick when he followed up after Hodgson’s chip ahead had run loose to jog home unopposed and round off an emphatic victory.

In Cumbria Division One, Hawcoat Park continued to build momentum as they won for the second week running by defeating Cockermouth 27-14 at home to take themselves up to fifth.

And in what was a successful weekend for the club, Hawcoat’s A team edged a thrilling match against Vale of Lune 4th XV 34-31 to pick up their second league win of the campaign.

For the first time in two years, Furness were able to field a 2nd XV last Saturday and they marked the occasion by running out 39-12 winners against their counterparts from Cockermouth.

Hawcoat Park will look to make it three wins in a row when they travel to Aspatria this weekend, while there’s a local derby between Furness and Millom and Windermere will want to pick up where they left off away at Creighton.
