Defender Brian Wilson has accepted his own performance at Chorley wasn’t good enough, as his first start for over two months fell on what turned out to be a disastrous afternoon for Barrow AFC.

In a way, Wilson is having to start his Holker Street career all over again after a calf injury suffered in the second game of the season, at Halifax Town, kept him out for an extended period.

He made his comeback as a substitute at Bromley the previous week, in what was a tactical switch that saw him replace Bluebirds captain Josh Granite.

With Granite unavailable at Chorley due to a knee problem, Wilson stepped into the centre of defence alongside Dan Jones but was unable to prevent the Magpies from coming back from a two-goal deficit and knocking AFC out of the FA Cup.

Wilson said: “It was a poor display, including myself. A lot of fans travelled down to watch the game and I’m really disappointed with my performance as well as the team’s.

“There was a lack of concentration from us from the first minute of the second half when we conceded a goal.

“With my part in that, I should have done better with the ball down the line and also individual errors in the rest of the game cost us.”

The performance, or lack of one, at Victory Park, came as a surprise as Barrow had been full of energy in recent matches and had produced some excellent football at times.

But none of that was on display during an awful second half with the players looking lethargic and unable to get their passing game going at all.

Wilson said: “We looked very flat in the second half – they started better than us and we didn’t match their work-rate.

“We shot ourselves in the foot and we’ve let the manager down, we’ve let Pete [Atherton] down, we’ve let the staff down and we’ve let the fans down.

“It’s really disappointing and it’s hard to take because we’ve been knocked out of the cup.”

It’s going to be a long week for Barrow’s players, who will have to wait until Saturday for the chance to redeem themselves, with Barnet heading to Holker Street in the National League.

“It’s a shame we don’t have a Tuesday night game to put things right, but we’ve got to work hard in training and we need to put it right on Saturday,” Wilson said.
