OLLIE Wilkes is one of two former Barrow Raiders players named in Scotland’s 35-man training squad for the upcoming European Championships.

The prop from Ulverston, who now plies his trade up the coast at Workington Town, has not featured for the Bravehearts since 2013, but was recalled after a five-year absence by new coaches John Duffy and Chris Chester.

Also included in the squad is former Raiders loan player Ben Hellewell, fresh from helping London Broncos win promotion to Super League for the 2019 season.

However, Raiders winger Brett Carter has not been named in the squad and Shane Toal, who played for Scotland in last year’s Rugby League World Cup, is unavailable due to a long-standing ligament injury which is set to keep him out well into next year.

Meanwhile, former Barrow Island youth player Morgan Knowles has been left out of the Wales squad for the tournament, which doubles up as a qualifier for the 2021 World Cup in England.

Knowles was part of the Wales squad which played in Australia last year, but head coach John Kear has opted not to include the St Helens forward this time around.

The European Championship gets under way this Friday night when Scotland host the Welsh in Galashiels, followed by Ireland playing France in Dublin on Saturday afternoon.
