DAVID Cairns has warned his Furness Raiders players not to take previous results at face value ahead of this afternoon’s match at home to Warrington Wolves’ Priestley College team (kick-off 2pm).

The Super League outfit’s College Rugby League team lost 30-10 to New College Pontefract in their last fixture, with the Yorkshire side in turn going down 60-6 to Furness last Wednesday.

But head coach Cairns will not allow complacency to creep in.

“Some of the lads had looked at their fixtures and they were beaten by Pontefract, who we beat, but I said to them not to go on that,” said Cairns.

“You don’t prepare for a game because they got beaten by the team we beat, because they could have had a weakened team like we did the week before.

“You’ve got to prepare to face your strongest test and if it isn’t that’s difference, then you take each game as it comes.

“But they are prepared; they’ve all played for a long time and they know how to play.”

Afternoon fixtures mean some players are unavailable due to college and work commitments, but Cairns is happy for those to take priority.

“We said if they’ve got to work or they’ve got college work, that’s more important for them to do,” said Cairns.

“There will be games where we need them and they know that, but we don’t want to put pressure on lads.”
