Indiscipline proved to be Furness’ undoing as they were narrow defeated 21-20 on their own patch by Workington in Cumbria Division Two.

It was the first time this season that Furness have been defeated at the Strawberry Grounds and it allowed their opponents to leapfrog them into third in the table.

On what was a frustrating afternoon for the hosts, they had two penalty tries awarded against them during the match, with Workington’s other scores coming from Andrew Lowe and their captain Sam Robinson.

Furness have this weekend off before returning to action with a local derby at home to Millom on October 27. They will be looking to get back on track after two straight defeats.

Windermere faced the difficult task of travelling to second-placed Carlisle Crusaders, but it was one they were more than up for, as they earned an impressive 10-10 draw.

This was despite ‘Mere not being able to call upon star men Jamie Hardman and Andy Duncan for the game and they will have the chance to build on this result when they welcome Egremont in a fortnight.

Millom’s efforts to claim their first win of the season were frustrated when their match at whipping boys Creighton was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. They were far from the only local sports team to be defeated by the weather, but they should be fresh for their upcoming trip to Furness.
