CHRISTINE Burton and Larraine Morrison played some excellent golf to break their duck in the Mail Ladies Open at Furness.

The delighted Dunnerholme double act pipped home players Claire Largue and Diane Herbert and Carus Green pair Irene Wharton and Avril Standing to win the four-ball better-ball competition.

With the three leading pairs all scoring 42 points, it was Burton and Morrison’s outstanding performance on the back nine at the Walney links which made the difference.

“There were three of us all with 42 points but we won the back nine with 23 points,” said Dunnerholme Lady Captain Burton.

“Larraine birdied the 17th and I parred the 18th so that swung it a bit for us.

“When you’re playing on your own course you’ve got a bit of an advantage so to win it at Furness was nice.”

She added: “We had no idea we had won until they actually annonced it. I played off a handicap of 14 and Larraine played off 17 so we knew 42 was not a bad knock, and it was a nice surprise.”

Burton and Morrison have been playing together for a lot of years and they were thrilled to finally win one of South Cumbrian golf’s most prestigious tournaments.

“We’ve played in this most years and never won it, so it’s quite a nice surprise,” said Burton.

“We’ve been friends a long time, so generally if it’s a two-ball competition we play together so it was nice to win this one together.

“Larraine played well, and when she didn’t have a good hole I did, and it just seemed to work out well for us.”
