THE comments by Barrow BID manager Colin Garnett about the struggles of the high street (page six) caught our eye.

"People have now become so lazy they don’t even want to have to walk round a supermarket," he said.

“Look at the queues at KFC. It’s about convenience.

“Town centres have to become about an experience, that could mean music and entertainment rather than just shopping.”

Although coronavirus has impacted upon town centre stores massively, Barrow and many other town centres were already having problems before COVID-19 struck.

This is why Barrow bid for money from the government's high street fund and is also looking at ways to improve the town through the #BrilliantBarrow scheme.

But perhaps Mr Garnett has hit the nail on the head. People's habits also need to change.

The town centre needs to become a destination to attract the crowds.

Before the virus hit, consumers were already using online retail because of its convenience. Since everyone has been at home, this will only have grown.

Enticing shoppers away from their 'lazy' use of the web to buy their goods will take quite an effort. Hopefully the future of Barrow town centre will be mapped out the little extras that make visiting a town centre worthwhile.
