STUDENTS on Walney have waged a war on litter - particularly plastics that endanger sealife and wildlife in their coastal community.
Walney School students will be out with their litter pickers tomorrow to clean up areas around Biggar Bank on the seafront.
The young people and teachers are also due to be joined by councillors for the island and a representative for Barrow Borough Council's Street Care team during the afternoon.
Staff at the school said students are really enthusiastic about tackling the litter problems in the area after they completed a topic about recycling.
The school then organised a litter pick for Year Seven and invited some members of the community to help out.
They hope to inspire others to recycle their plastics and keep the island clean and tidy.
Student Cayden Henry, 11, of Year Seven said: "We need to help out to ensure plastic stops going in the sea and killing fish."
Fellow student Brooke-Leah Grieve, 12 , of Year Seven, said: "Litter can kill animals and it isn't nice to have litter around the beach where people go to relax.
"We are hoping to inspire people to take their rubbish with them or use the bin."
