THE Mail readers have reacted to the news that bird flu has been confirmed as the cause of death for a number of swans on Ulverston Canal.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has confirmed that bird flu caused death of 10 swans in Ulverston canal

The wild birds at the canal tested positive for avian influenza H5N8, however the pathotype of the strain is yet to be confirmed.

Liz Hodges said: "We have had nine swans who have died of bird flu this week in Blackpool Stanley Park, so sad."

Guy James Pickup said: "Very sad, always brightened our regular walks along the canal."

Rachel Brown Buckley said: "Just a reminder for anyone that walks the canal and has pet birds/chickens the virus spreads on shoes/car wheels so if you do take extra care if you walk down the canal and sanitize your shoes etc before attending to your birds."
