ASKAM and Ulverston have been named two of the safest towns to live in the region in a recent survey.

Independent comparison service, ValuePenguin, pulled together statistics from police.uk via the UKCrimeStats website in order to identify the safest places in North West England. Ninety-six post towns with populations greater than 3,000 residents were included in the study. The analysis of both violent crime and property crime shows overall crime scores ranging from 640 to 5,473 - a lower score indicating less crime - adjusted for population size

Askam has been ranked the number one safest small town in the North-West of England. With a population of over 3,000 residents, it boasts an overall score of just 640.

Remarkably, Askam and Ireleth's violent crime score of 448 is a whopping 78% lower than average across the North West. Households earn an average of £38,000 per year in this safe area and local police have recently prioritised underage drinking to continue keeping the area safe.

Ulverston has also been named as the number one safest mid-sized place to live.

Former Mayor of Ulverston, Mark Wilson, said: "This is fantastic news.

"I am very pleased to hear we are the safest mid-sized town to live in the region.

"We are a town with many talents that help to support and develop ourselves."

A spokesperson from Cumbria Police, said: "Whilst it is nice to see there are a number of Cumbria towns and villages referenced in the list, we would urge people living in these areas not be to complacent when it comes to crime.

"The simplest crime prevention measures such as locking doors and windows and not leaving valuables on display in cars can have a dramatic impact on crime.

"It is also important we continue to have a strong relationship with communities. People reporting offences and intelligence to us greatly improves our ability to detect and prevent crime."
