A MAJOR opticians chain has agreed to sell its Barrow outlet amid competition fears after signing a deal to buy 209 Tesco Opticians stores.

The Competition and Markets Authority has agreed to give the go-ahead to Vision Express on the multiple’s planned purchase of 209 Tesco Opticians stores.

In September, the CMA raised concerns that Vision Express would not face sufficient competition in Barrow, Helsten and Ryde because of a lack of rival firms.

In response, Vision Express has said it will divest the three stores.

Chief executive officer of Vision Express, Jonathan Lawson, said: “We are pleased the CMA responded positively to our undertakings in the areas of Barrow, Helston and Ryde.”

The CMA was concerned that customers in these areas could face price increases or a reduction in the choice of the products and services in-store because of a lack of competition.

“All affected team members will be protected by transfer of undertaking (protection of employment) regulations, with their employment being transferred to a new optical retailer,” Mr Lawson added.

Vision Express in Dalton Road only opened in December 2014 after buying family firm Conlons. All previous customers and their records were transferred to Vision Express.

It is not known who Vision Express will sell its Barrow outlet to but the firm is obliged to ensure staff are retained by the new owner.

Specsavers already has a shop in Barrow at the top end of Dalton Road.
