A WOMAN who was banned from all shops in Barrow town centre has been jailed after she was caught shoplifting.

Nicola Jayne Marie Duke was jailed for 20 weeks at South Cumbria Magistrates' Court yesterday after she was found guilty of shoplifting.

The 37-year-old, of Mill Bank in Barrow, stole perfume worth £230 from Asda in Barrow on January 18.

She was jointly charged with Marc Whitehead, 41, of Mill Bank, who was jailed for 11 weeks. At the time of the offence Whitehead was still subject to a suspended sentence.

As well as all shops in the town centre Duke was banned from Walney Road Retail Park.

They were both ordered to pay £300 costs and £115 compensation.

She was given a three-year Criminal Behaviour Order in November banning her from all shops in the main Barrow town centre shopping areas and retail complexes for three years.

Sergeant Caroline Milligan said at the time: “Prolific shoplifters can have a crippling impact on businesses in the community, big and small.

“Those who steal from retail premises increase the costs of goods to other customers whilst also intimidating staff, making going about daily work more difficult and challenging.

"Cumbria police will continue to take positive action for those who steal and today’s result shows that the courts will support retailers by issuing Criminal Behaviour Orders."
