A town council is on the hunt for answers after a Cumbrian beach was named as the dirtiest in the UK.
A recent study was published ranking beaches across the country in terms of water pollution with Haverigg Beach said to have the worst results.
Between 2019 and 2023, research conducted by the Environment Agency has listed Haverigg as either sufficient or good in terms of water quality.
However, with monthly samples being taken since May this year, the highest spikes of E. Coli bacteria and Intestinal Enterococci have been greater than comparative months in the past few years.
A spokesperson from Millom Town Council commented: "We are currently looking into further information regarding Haverigg beach following publication of a survey carried out which placed Haverigg in the dirtiest beach with poor water cleanliness.
"Contact is being made with the Environment Agency, United Utilities and Cumberland Authority to try and resolve the situation.
"Millom Town Council will keep the community informed as and when we receive any updates."
