MORECAMBE Bay trust reaffirmed its support for bringing radiotherapy treatment to Westmorland General in Kendal, according to a local MP.

The MP for Westmorland and Lonsdale Tim Farron visited the hospital to see the new diagnostics hub and the oncology department.

This department provides chemotherapy to cancer patients.

For years, Mr Farron has campaigned for the hospital to get a radiotherapy unit. He is the chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Radiotherapy.

He argues that introducing satellite units would help clear the Covid backlog of cancer patients waiting for treatment.

According to a post on his social media, he said that health bosses at the trust have said that they would back a satellite unit at Westmorland General when he spoke to them as part of his visit.

In December last year, Mr Farron met the minister of state in the Department for Health and Social Care Helen Whately.

At this meeting, he encouraged the minister to look at investing in satellite radiotherapy units across the country, including at Westmorland General.
