AN APPLICATION to convert a stone barn into holiday accommodation has been submitted to South Lakeland District Council.
The proposal would see two 'holiday dwellings' – one one-bedroom and one two-bedroom – created in the structure at Spring House, Scales, near Ulverston.
A cattery that operates out of an extension to the north of the barn would remain in business.
A heritage statement submitted in support of the application says: "The upper wooden floor [of the barn] is completely degraded due to excessive historic woodworm.

"Continual maintenance is required, which cannot be justified for a redundant building and could lead to dereliction.
"To prevent such dereliction, the structure requires to be restored, and the only possible solution is by means of domestic conversion."
A design statement submitted with the application says applicant Darren Hockaday would use a section of the barn for a garage and would have a workshop above this.
