RAW meat was stored next to cooked meat at a cafe slammed by food hygiene inspectors.

The High Tide Cafe Bar in Dalton was handed a one out of five rating for its hygiene following a visit by inspectors.

Bosses of the cafe, based at Dalton Leisure Centre, were told to make urgent improvements by Barrow Council after the inspection.

The Mail has obtained a report of the inspection, which said a 'major improvement' in the management was necessary.

According to the report, during the inspection cooked sausages were found stored on top of raw sausages 'creating a serious risk of contamination and rendering the food unsafe'.

Cafe bosses were told to urgently ensure that cooked food and raw food are separated at all times.

Inspectors also said at the time of the visit tuna and ham was not refrigerated and was found to be at 14.3°C.

"These foods are high risk as they are likely to support the growth of pathogenic micro-organisms and the formation of toxins," cafe bosses were told.

"Ensure that high-risk food products are not stored above 8°C.- I expect this to be complied with immediately."

Another concern raised related to no soap being provided at hand washing basins.

As well as that it was noted that food handlers were not wearing 'suitable over-clothing'.

The council report said: "You must ensure that all persons working in food handling areas wear suitable, clean, and where appropriate, protective clothing."

Food debris was also said to have been found on the door of a freezer. Food was also found on shelving the kitchen.

Inspectors also raised concern over a lack of a food safety management system and no information on potential allergens in products.   

Cafe bosses were told a total of 14 urgent improvements were legally required, with another three recommendations made.

The report was released following the inspection carried out on July 24.

Bosses of the cafe were approached for comment.
