A MUCH-LOVED grandmother died after suffering a fall while out delivering Easter cards, an inquest heard.

Winifred Jacqueline Grant – known as ‘Jackie’ – died on April 10 2022 at Royal Preston Hospital, Cockermouth Coroners’ Court heard yesterday.

A retired radiographer, Mrs Grant was out delivering Easter cards near her home in Ashmount Gardens in Grange when she fell over on April 9.

The 89-year-old was spotted lying face down on the drive by a neighbour who quickly rang the ambulance, the court was told.

Mrs Grant was unresponsive but breathing and paramedics took her to Furness General Hospital.

The grandmother-of-ten was then transferred to Royal Preston Hospital where surgery was deemed too risky and she was placed in palliative care before dying on April 10.

Mrs Grant’s cause of death was given as haematoma.

Mrs Grant was born in Stockport and grew up as a Catholic, which she practised her whole life.

She trained as a radiologist and worked at Stepping Hill hospital. In 1956, she met Roger Grant and the pair had four children together, ten grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

The couple moved to Grange in their retirement and made many friends there. They continued to enjoy life walking around the Lakes and spending time abroad.

Roger died of bowel cancer in 2008 and Mrs Grant remained in Cumbria where the family visited her regularly.

Mrs Grant’s health issues slowed her down in later life – and she found lockdown hard due to her deteriorating mobility, the court was told.

In a statement written by Mrs Grant’s daughter Sally, she said the family encouraged their mum not to walk out the house but she was ‘independent and knew her own mind’.

“We do smile at the fact she was delivering Easter cards – she must’ve felt upbeat on the day,” Sally said.

Coroner Kirsty Gomersal recorded the death as a tragic accident which was a direct result of a fall.
