READERS have defended claims made by a national newspaper that Barrow is a ‘drug-plagued’ town with a death-row high street.

In an article published on The Sun website, Barrow has been branded as a 'drug-plagued' town which is driving young people out of the area.

The article is part of The Sun’s Broken Britain series, which focuses on towns struggling to survive during the cost of living crisis.

Mail readers inundated social media with comments defending the town and its reputation.

Norma A Powell said: “You can't tar the whole of Barrow into one headline. Yes there are drugs, as in most towns. I think we have certain areas where drugs are prevalent but what about the other beautiful areas. I bet they weren't mentioned.”

Sarah Brookes said: “Unfortunately drugs are on the rise in a lot of towns and cities not just Barrow

“Even down south you cannot give a true account based on a headline. There’s a lot of good in Barrow and beautiful scenery. Why can’t newspapers list the good stuff and not the negative?”

Pat Shaw said: “Demolish 'House of Lords', bring back into use empty shops on Dalton Road and Portland Walk. Encourage pop up shops, workshops etc, police area more, arrest the vandals. Make sure CCTV is working.”

Keith Hill said: “Ask yourself do you want a better, healthier Barrow? More articles like this will wake people up and hopefully get more help and investment to the area.

“If you are happy as it is, then ignore this.”

John Watson-Rigg said: “I've been coming to Barrow for over 30 years, I have always found it a welcoming place with the people very friendly and helpful.

“Obviously like in every town, village and city you'll find people who deal and take drugs. I've never seen that side of town. The town has some excellent places to visit, a theatre and many fabulous restaurants. Some people always seem to dwell on the negative. Has the reporter even spent time in the town?”

Christine Johnson said: “It’s not just Barrow, it's a national pandemic.”
