READERS have had their say on a major programme of works to make the A590 safer and more reliable is due to be carried out - if a funding bid is successful.

Cumbria County Council has submitted an application to the Government’s Levelling Up Fund that could see nearly £20 million in funding awarded to upgrade a section of the A590 and other roads in the county.

According to the council, the bid would see a 'comprehensive' programme of improvements made on the road from the Dalton bypass to Barrow town centre.

Two other stretches of road, including the A595 south of Sellafield, could also receive funding from the bid.

The improvement would include resurfacing, drainage works and bridge repairs.

Lesley Sedgwick Fursey said: “Why is it classed as ‘levelling up’? It's crucial work that has been needed for ages. And the money is to be split between 3 areas, so it isn't all for Barrow/A590. So it won't go far at all. Fill a few potholes and paint a few white lines and it will be spent.”

Amber Herbert said: “Put the money back into taking down the awful cycling paths by BAE.”

Brad Palfreyman said: “Just put massive cycle routes down it that take up most of the road. That’ll work.”

Ray Livermore said: “Get rid of the road rage lanes at roundabouts and junctions for a start.”

Khan Sprague said: “Only way to improve the A590 is to terminate it before it gets to Barrow.”

Antöny Statham said: “£20,000,000 won't go very far. They do need to seriously do something with the A590.”

Hannah Hartley said: “That turning in the picture should be left hand turn only. The exit out of Asda has a right hand turn lane so doesn't hold up the traffic.”

Ben Stretton said: “20 mil, that should fill half a dozen pothole.”

Ged Corner said: “Bollards, Islands, speed bumps and traffic lights, that should do it!”

Peter Koth said: “Don't Bother.”
