READERS have shared their congratulations with a Barrovian athlete who exhibited success at the Commonwealth Games.

In the inaugural 3x3 wheelchair basketball format, Tyler Baines competed as part of a four-man squad to bring home the bronze medal for his country.

Baines played alongside two-time Paralympic bronze medallist and current World and European Champion Lee Manning, as well current Diploma in Sporting Excellence athletes Charlie McIntyre and Abderrahim Taghrest.

The athletes came third at the competition, bringing home the bronze medal, after beating Malaysia 21-11.

He said: “Wheelchair basketball has never been at the Commonwealth Games before, and to medal on our first time is unbelievable – a dream come true. We got to 21 points with two seconds left on the clock, and that was our aim, that’s what we wanted to do all tournament, and we did it in our final game.

"A huge congratulations to all athletes and team staff who competed in Birmingham 2022. We’d also like to extend a huge well done to all referees and table officials who worked the 3×3 games, as well as BWB members who volunteered at the Games."

Tyler is the second Barrow-born athlete so see huge success this week, with footballer Georgia Stanway forming part of the winning women’s Euro 2022 team on Sunday.
