BARROW town centre received a spruce up after businesses complained about cleanliness.

Barrow Business Improvement District (BID) cleaned 'designated areas of the town centre' earlier this week after local businesses complained.

On a post on Facebook by Barrow BID about cleaning the centre, one of the comments said: "Shouldn't need the businesses of Barrow to raise concerns about the cleanliness, the council can see how unclean it looks."

Another said: "Great job done but why isn't it done regularly by the council we pay our taxes to?"

In a pithy remark, one said: "Town should be spotless, very little footfall to get it dirty now."

Councillor Ann Thomson, the leader of Barrow Borough Council and the lead member for Cleaner, Greener Neighbourhoods said: "The council carries out a strict daily street cleaning regime to ensure the borough is litter free, safe and clean for residents and visitors.

"In Barrow town centre, street cleaning takes place continuously with a member of staff based permanently in the town centre. Street cleansing also takes place and has been undertaken recently."

The councillor pinned the state of Barrow's centre on littering.

"It is always disappointing to see litter left on our streets and we would urge people to put items in one of the many bins installed throughout the town," she said.

"We know so many people carry a real sense of pride in our borough and using bins or taking litter home is one easy way that everyone can contribute to this."

Barrow BID was set up in September 2016 to promote and regenerate Barrow's Town Centre and is funded by the local businesses.

After a vote in the summer of last year, they will continue to represent business interests in Barrow until August 2026.

Barrow BID's chairman Paul Hodgson responded last month to a viral tweet that called Portland Walk 'depressing.'

He advocated getting more people into Barrow through events and by focusing on local businesses.

Barrow BID was approached for comment.
