A MICHELIN-starred culinary venue is set for a makeover as permission has been sought to install a brand-new kitchen and bar area.

Rogan and Co, on Devonshire Square in Cartmel, is owned by world-famous chef Simon Rogan, adding its one Michelin star to nearby sister restaurant L'Enclume's three.

Rogell Ltd operates the destination restaurant alongside letting rooms in the attached L'Enclume House as one building, and has applied to South Lakeland District Council for planning permission and Listed Building Consent to convert the one ground floor letting room into a bar area, and to extend the kitchen into the existing restaurant area.

The planning statement says: "Many visitors to the village come because of Rogan’s and L’Enclume.

"The businesses, therefore, contribute much to the local economy and provide a number of jobs in the village.

"Rogan's is a small restaurant with 47 covers.

"Access to the restaurant is direct from the main road and there is limited space to welcome guests and invite them to relax with a drink before dining, which is typically expected of restaurants of this calibre.

"The existing kitchens in Rogan's are towards the rear of the building in a series of small rooms.

"The arrangement is difficult as the space for food preparation, storage, and wash-up is very restricted.

"There is, therefore, a need to extend the restaurant to provide a designated bar space, additional storage, and improved kitchen facilities."

The proposal allows for a glazed link in the courtyard area, connecting the restaurant to the new bar area, and the layout alterations will allow for the fire escape route to be the front door, with the moving of a glazed fire screen.

The aim of the plans will be to provide a link between the existing restaurant in Rogan's and the room to the rear of L’Enclume House (currently used as a letting room) which will become a bar area.

"In order to facilitate this, there is a requirement to relocate the toilets from their current location in Rogan's to a new location off the proposed bar area in L’Enclume House," said the statement.

"This bar will provide a space for guests to relax and have a drink before and after a meal and will assist in the smooth running of the restaurant."

The proposals are currently being scrutinised by SLDC.
