A BARROW Dad has taken on a series of half marathons in support of St Mary’s Hospice in memory of his late wife.

Simon Hulbert, born in Barrow, has been fundraising by completing half marathons alongside his son Charlie, since the passing of his wife Jo in 2016.

He has an extensive schedule of runs in the coming months and is currently collecting donations for the hospice that cared for his wife.

Simon said: “I’ve always been doing a bit of running, nothing with any great events, but just me against myself.

“I try to fundraise where I can.

“My son Charlie is sixteen and he has joined me for a few events before and we like to help out other charities like Breast Cancer Care, but the hospice has a real person connection for us.

“When my wife passed away a group of her friends organised a fundraiser at the Coronation Hall which raised about £2000 alone. I tried to add to it with my running and got together about £350.

“I did a few runs for breast cancer care over the last few years, but for the last three or four I have done them mainly for the hospice.

“I’ve got five planned runs coming up. I did the Carlisle half marathon recently, and the North run is coming up as well. They’re all half marathons and I’ll be going around in a shirt for the hospice.”

St Mary's Hospice wrote on social media: "Simon Hulbert's beloved wife Jo was cared for by the hospice when she sadly died at the age of 43.

"Jo was a devoted and loving Mum to Charlie who was just 10 years old when she died, since then both Simon and Charlie have completed so many fundraising challenges in memory of Jo.

"Simon is completing not one but five half marathons this year to celebrate the life of his beloved wife Jo and to support St Mary's.

"If you could spare a couple of £'s to get Simon to his target it would be very much appreciated."

Simon will be taking part in the Northumberland half marathon on July 3, York Half Marathon on July 24, The Great North Run on September 11, and the Manchester Half Marathon on October 9.
