BUILDING upon centuries of tradition in the community known for its trade and business, the Ulverston market charter saw another period of great success.

In 1994. the fun began on Wednesday with a 5km road race hosted by Hoad Hill Harriers and the main public celebration is on Saturday, September 8.

The free Family Charter Day Celebrations were held in the town centre from 11am to 3.30pm on the day.

There was a family pet dog competition at 2pm and a best decorated bike contest for many to enjoy.

Back in 1994, The Mail on September 5 noted: "A new princess was crowned as Ulverston marked the opening of its 15th charter festival.

"Nicola Jewitt was a bit nervous as she took her place next to mayor Janette Jenkinson. But the crowd showed its appreciation as the banner was placed over her head."
