Outdoor wellbeing days are being offered around Morecambe Bay to help communities recover from the impact of the pandemic.

Cumbria Wildlife Trust is running wildlife walks, mindfulness moments, beach crafts and outdoor exploration activities for businesses and their employees, as part of its Wild Wellbeing Day scheme.

Thanks to £20,000 of funding from green energy company Ørsted, through its Walney Extension Community Fund, the wildlife charity is helping local communities, employees, colleges, youth groups and teams to reconnect not only to nature, but also with each other.

According to the charity, many of those who are returning to work have experienced loneliness, isolation and stress over the past two years, as a result of the Covid pandemic.

Yolanda Aze, community engagement officer at Cumbria Wildlife Trust, said: “People are returning to work in all settings, and being back together will be a great relief for some, but a source of anxiety for others.

“There's significant evidence that contact with nature reduces our levels of stress, improves our self-esteem and increases our resilience. By bringing people back together in a supportive outdoor environment at a Wild Wellbeing Day, whether on the sand dunes or in woodlands, we will help colleagues reconnect with each other, while they experience, re-discover and enjoy the natural world around them.

“The sessions will be fun and inclusive, inspired by the seasons, the local area and the participants. Whether it’s quiet, mindful activities you are looking for, getting your hands dirty with some practical nature conservation, or a livelier, more active exploration of the outdoors, from a shoresearch to an egg-case hunt on the beach (looking for egg-cases from sharks and skates) - we can offer businesses a day that will suit the needs and interests of their employees.”

The Wild Wellbeing Days are offered at locations around Morecambe Bay, including the beaches at Earnse Bay and Biggar Bank, on the western side of Walney Island, near Barrow.
