CONCERNS are being raised over vandalism of a former care home by children on Walney.
Staff at Walney Central Nursery have become alarmed at the number of children accessing Combe House, which neighbours the nursery.
Staff are alerting parents in the area to the potentially fatal activity taking place on the site.
In a warning to parents, they said: “We have been told by children meeting in this building that there are lots of drugs involved, we are not saying that your child is taking drugs, but what we are saying is that we have been told about children who are accessing this building frequently that they are witnessing this happening.”
A staff member and a committee member has also smelt cannabis outside of the building.
On one occasion, a girl is said to have been attended by an ambulance due to cuts caused by broken glass, and nursery staff have spoken to another child who has attended A&E due to cuts on their legs after falling inside Combe House.
A nursery spokesman said: “The children are accessing the roof and running around on it. We have witnessed this on many occasions and have spoken to the individuals about the dangers of being on the roof and they just laugh and say it is fun.”
The nursery stated they are making parents aware ‘not to point blame on anyone but to try and prevent an accident that is waiting to happen and could be fatal’.
The nursery has also had to use its own funds to make the area safe.
A spokesman said: “We would also like to express that Walney Central Nursery is a charity (non-profit making organisation) we have had to use our funds to try and make our area safe for our little people. But are upset that we have seen our property being accessed.
“We have had to use our own money to put up the fence so we can make our property safe.
“You can see two lads inside nursery grounds on CCTV, all the information and videos have been forwarded to the police. Staff members have had to pick up beer cans from our new grassed area.”
