A DATE has been announced for a multi-million pound town centre rejuvenation project.

Barrow Borough Council has released a tender notice to appoint a consultant to work on the project

The full scope of the contractor's job would be to produce detailed designs and provide a package of preconstruction site and works information.

They would also be responsible for the Town Centre Community Hub and 'associated public realm improvements'.

And it says that the planned beginning of construction is Spring 2023, to 'meet Levelling up fund timetables'.

A section of Barrow's market hall is already due to be demolished ahead of the redevelopment.

A building at the Portland Walk entrance will be taken down in anticipation of transformative works at the market.

The market hall is due to undergo significant changes after millions of pounds in funding was awarded to Barrow Council by the Government.

The unused unit at 56 Portland Walk is due to be demolished along with the covered walkway at the entrance to the market.

The £16 million funding for the market development and other town centre projects was confirmed when the Government announced its Budget in October.

Work to the market hall would see the ground floor of the building regenerated to include improved stall spaces, a food hall and a soft play area for children.

There is also due to be a new-look exterior offering a shared entrance with improved access to The Forum and the market.

Better connectivity with the rest of the town through improvements to transport infrastructure and the public realm is also due to be carried out.

The Levelling Up Fund’s goal is to regenerate town centres in the country, assist cultural and heritage institutions, and build up transport projects.
