A PREHISTORIC phenomenon descended upon the town centre at the weekend, bringing thousands of adults and children alike to get lost in a primeval spectacle.

Businesses did a roaring trade and families enjoyed a rare experience as Europe's biggest T-Rex and a host of his friends rampaged around the town.

Following in the giant footsteps of Barrow BID’s hugely popular Dinosaur Day in 2020, the Jurassic beasts returned for one day only on Saturday, May 21.

Zeus the T-Rex and Tank the Triceratops appeared on the Ørsted sponsored main arena outside the Town Hall, with Ritchie the Raptor and Spence the Spinosaurus entertaining crowds through the town centre to Dalton Road.

And the crowds thought it was the best thing from before the time of sliced bread.

Isaac Moffatt, who spoke to us with his son, Isaiah, said: “It’s doing well, I think it’s brilliant.

“Isaiah loves dinosaurs, and it’s something you never see anywhere else.

“It draws you to the town – we’ve been for something to eat for dinner, and [Isaiah will] certainly visit a few shops with me.”

With a host of activities lined up for young adventurers including Storytime Adventures, Baby Dinosaur Meets and a special edition of Jurassic Park, the event was perfect for families.

The beasts began with a penned show in front of the town hall after bursting through the front doors.

They showed off in front of the crowd before making their way through Portland Walk to Dalton Road, coaxed by their keepers with the promise of ‘McDonald’s chicken nuggets’.

Of course, there were plenty of antics on the journey, with dinosaurs attacking innocent bystanders and even making a foray into New Look and Game on the way.

They then showed off again in a pen on Dalton Road.

Debbie Smith, Paul McNicholas and their daughter Connie had also visited town to see the dinosaurs.

Ms Smith said: “It’s brilliant, the town has never been so busy!

“The guys that are doing it are so interactive, I love seeing the excitement in the kids faces when the dinosaurs go right up close to them.

“And we’ve now come into town to shop. I just wish the event was advertised better, I think I’ve only seen one billboard for it and could have easily not known it was happening.”
