THERE was A Skye Full of Stars and sunshine as a fundraising walk honoured the memory of Skye Mitchell.

Among the 2,000 people to tackle the annual 20-mile-long Coniston to Barrow, and 40-mile-long Keswick to Barrow on Saturday, were 61 fundraisers for A Skye Full of Stars.

The event sees teams complete the trek to raise money for causes close to their hearts.

The charity A Skye Full of Stars was set up by Sharon Fry, the mother of 18-year-old Millom beauty queen and campaigner Skye Mitchell, who died alongside her friend Caitlin Huddlestone in a car accident in 2017.

Since then Ms Fry has taken to raising money to help young people realise their dreams in honour of her daughter’s memory by handing out grants to youngsters within the community to help better themselves.

Grants have supported people with things such as activities, university and course costs, and IT equipment.

As the mammoth walking event wrapped up, the charity tweeted: “What a day, 61 in our team of walkers... all back safe and sound. Absolute superstars each and every one of them. We are totally overwhelmed, bring on next year.”

Out of the 61 team members, Jay was the first to make it to the Barrow Hawcoat Park finish line to be cheered on by the huge crowd of supporters that had gathered for the event.

Among the supporters was the adorable six-month-old Evie Skye Smith, Skye’s baby cousin, who wore her very own Skye t-shirt to the event.

Overwhelmed by the support shown and thankful for the team of runners, Ms Fry said: “This year we had 61 walkers, all wearing our bright pink Skye t-shirt.

“We are overwhelmed with the support we have received.

“It was an emotional day but seeing 61 Skye’s definitely helped.

“To date our charity - A Skye Full of Stars - has awarded grants to children and young people totalling £22,000.”
