Thousands of pounds’ worth of motorbikes were stacked mudguard to mudguard at Ulverston’s Coronation Hall in 1991 in a gleaming display of nostalgia.

Scores of bikers flocked to the show the first in the area which had been organised by the bikers club, The Reapers MC.

The roar down memory lane included classics such as BSA, Norton, Triumph and Harley Davidson.

And it was the Harley in particular that caught the eye of town mayor Cllr Bill Davies.

Bill, a lifelong motorbike fan, headed for the Coro as soon as he heard about the show. “I went there in an unofficial capacity,” he said afterwards.

Under the headline ‘Classics on Parade’, The Mail described how around 60 bikes were on display from all over the North West at the show, which was organised by club president Phil Lane of Ulverston.

After mounting the classic Harley Davidson, Cllr Davies recalled his biking days during the thirties.

“I used to have a Royal Enfield 350cc,” he said. “I paid five pounds for it in those days. It was a jolly good bike as well.”

The show was intended to be the first of an annual show of bikes by the Reapers MC club.

The club also held a rock concert in the evening, which was also in aid of charity.

In 1992 hundreds of motorcycle fans were at the Coronation Hall to see 60 vintage, veteran, classic and modern motorcycles on show.

The machines, together worth thousands of pounds, included powerful Harley Davidson models like a 1945 combination outfit - while the golden age of British bikes was represented by Triumph.

There were also some modern machines, among them an ex-TT racer shown by Eddie Crooks Motor Cycles.

It was the second show staged by the Dalton-based Reapers Motorcycle Club, which planned to make it an annual event.
