PHIL Brown wants the scenes of Exeter City’s promotion party to inspire Barrow AFC next season.

The Grecians’ faithful fans stormed onto the pitch at St James Park after victory secured them promotion to League One.

Battling Barrow took the lead through Cameron Dawson’s own goal before Kieran Phillips, who earlier hit the bar, levelled.

But Matt Jay’s late winner ended City’s painful decade-long stay in the fourth tier.

Barrow’s players had to sit back and watch as the hosts celebrated in style at the final whistle and back in the dressing room.

And Brown stressed” “If there’s anything to learn it’s the season’s performance.

“They haven’t won promotion tonight. Obviously they have, but they have won promotion over the course of 43 or 44 games.

“I was after my players at half-time. I wanted a performance, I wanted to spoil the party.

“I have no qualms about saying that to any Exeter fan because I wanted to spoil the party. I’m planning for the longer term future of me and Barrow. There’s a bigger picture to be had.

“In terms of the performances on the pitch that’s not the takeaway, it’s how they have played over the course of the season that we want to learn from.

“The most important part is that we want to be feeling this way next year. Euphoric, great celebrations, that’s what we want.

“We can learn from the way they played. There was nothing pretty in the way they played, and it’s a lovely surface, and they didn’t try to get it down and play complicated, intricate football. They got the ball forward and got it into areas that were going to hurt our centre halve.

“They did that enough and consequently we’ve lost the game.”

Brown believes the least Barrow deserved from the game was a point.

Remeao Hutton squandered a great chance to restore the lead and silence the raucous home fans.

“Did we deserve to get a point from it? I think so,” admitted Brown.

“If Remeao Hutton scores it puts us 2-1 up and who knows where the game’s going then?

“All of a sudden the crowd gets silenced and you’re seeing empty terraces as opposed to full terraces wanting to get on the pitch.

“That’s the difference in football. It’s about taking your chances and scoring in moments like that.

“We didn’t do that and we’ve lost the game because of it. A few things started to creep in which have crept in all season.”
