Ron Jackson's giant marrow proved a weighty problem at the Urswick and District Flower and Vegetable Show in 1991.

At 40lb it could not fit on the scales at the show, held in Great Urswick recreation hall.

The problem was solved by two friends, Ken and Gwendolyn Hornby, who drove the monster-sized vegetable to Ulverston in search of large scales

The green-fingered efforts of local gardeners went on display in 1996 when the Urswick and District Horticultural Society held its annual show.

The recreation hall was transformed into sea of colour with bright blooms of all shapes and sizes vying to attract the attention of the judges.

Villagers admired blossoming gladioli, delicate roses, plump onions and prize marrows.

But it wasn't just the outdoor efforts of society members that were being judged. Also competing for silverware was an assortment of jams, jellies, cakes and honey, tapestry, knitting and crochet work.

Society secretary Graeme Clark said: "Everyone loves coming here because it's such a friendly show. We get people coming from all over the place. We even have one chap from Morecambe exhibiting.

"It is fiercely competitive, but at the same time all in good fun.

"I think we've had a really successful show and we would like to thank everyone for all their support."
