BARROW Raiders are set to make their return to the Championship for the first time since 2019 and they are hoping to make a big impression on the league.

After a successful season in League 1 the newly promoted side are looking to make a better impact than they did in their last Championship campaign. Both players and back-room staff are confident they have a better structure in place, both in terms of club finances and on-field talent.

Their blend of experience and youth is one which is exciting for all the fans and has created a real 'buzz' in the club according to everyone.

Speaking about the last time Raiders were in the Championship, long-time sports reporter Paddy McAteer said: "Barrow are back in the Championship for the first time since 2019.

"Season 2018 went pretty well, drawing with money bags Toronto 8-8 at home in the league but losing out to the Canadian outfit16-18 in the Challenge cup, also at Craven Park.

"They also accounted for high flying Leigh at home 24-20, followed by two wins over Sunday's opponents Sheffield in successive weekends, 28-16 and 36-22 in the Cup.

"However tough games came around with Toulouse who are in the Super League this season for the first time, 50-4 in France and a hefty home defeat 72-6.

"2019 was not the best and were relegated they got the season off to a flyer on day one 22-18 win at Batley.

"It was another fifteen weeks before a second win, 54-10 at home to Rochdale.

"Rounding off the campaign completing the double over Batley.

"Raiders have not been beaten at home since losing to Bradford on August 11, 2019.

"However, the club's best ever season in the Championship was the 2009 season when they won the league leaders shield and the grand final with a 26-18 victory over Halifax losing out to Widnes in the Northern Rails final."

Raiders are looking to use the fortress that is the Matt Johnson Prestige Stadium to get a win in their Championship opener and keep that home record going - which will be vital in what is sure to be a tough season with some great teams. The club is hoping for a big crowd to get behind them to give the players a boost.
