Readers have been sharing their sadness after a Carlisle fish and chips restaurant has been listed for sale, according to a business sale website.

The Fryery, located on Scotch Street, has an asking price of £175,000, as listed on Businesses For Sale.

The premise comes fully fitted and has space for an 80-person cover in its restaurant.

The business was established over 16 years ago, with the reason for sale being that the seller is looking to focus on other commitments.

The advert indicates that the leasehold property has a turnover of £368,640.

The sale is being listed by Veritas Business Sales.

A popular chippy and takeaway main stay for the city, readers took the time to share their disappointment that it is being sold.

Chris Clark said: "Best chippy in Carlisle and the owners are really nice, it can't go.

"Hope they aren't crossing the ones in Newtown Road and Stanwix.

"Always said they should have opened one on London Road, it would have done well."

Liz Pratt agreed, and said: "No way, [it is] the best chippy around, [I am] absolutely gutted, [they do the] best steak pie ever."

Ada Pow said: "We are from Newcastle and love to go when we have business to do in Carlisle, very sad that it's up for sale best fish and chip's ever."

Heidi Hilland said that the news was a shame, and added: "I always go in the Fryery when I go to Carlisle."

Not quite ready to commit to such a large purchase, Chris Kelly asked: "How much for a small fish instead?"

Rob Morley, reflecting on the phenomenon of chains taking the place of independent traders, shops and eateries in the city, said: "Hopefully get a Costa in there."
