A DRINK driver was caught out by CCTV images that showed him reversing down a one-way street.

A court heard how joiner Michael Finlayson was reported to the police by a member of the public having been driving a van.

Officers saw the 39-year-old him get out the van and tracked down CCTV that showed he was the driver.

The defendant pleaded guilty to drink driving when he appeared at South Cumbria Magistrates' Court.

His solicitor said the incident could have a 'devastating'' impact on Finlayson's business.

Prosecutor Lee Dacre explained the incident, which happened on June 21.

He said: "Police received a 999 call saying two males appeared to be under the influence of alcohol.

"Police attended Oldham Street car park in Barrow.

"He was seen to get out the driver's side of a van.

"He was subsequently arrested and taken to Barrow custody.

"CCTV showed the van reversing from the corner of the street down the one-way system.

"The defendant can be seen as the driver."

Tests showed the driver had 106 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath - more than three times the legal limit of 35.

Mitigating, Trystan Roberts,

"I spoke to Mr Finlayson in relation to this incident.

"He tells me he accepts that the night before he had something to drink.

"He had a request from a customer and ended up driving earlier than anticipated."

He added: "This could have a devastating impact on his livelihood.

"He's a joiner and he's already struggling at the moment."

Magistrates sentenced the driver to a curfew, keeping him at home between 7pm and 7am for 10 weeks.

He was handed a 24-month ban from driving.

He accepted an offer to undertake a drink driving rehabilitation course, which would reduce the ban.

Magistrates also handed down a victim surcharge of £95 and prosecution costs of £85.
