CARE home residents and staff enjoyed a delicious visit from a popular fish and chip van.

Residents from Elmhurst care home situated on Priory Rd, Dragley Beck, Ulverston enjoyed a special evening tea as The Old Smithy van stopped by for them to order anything from the menu.

The residents could go out and order their preferred meal from sausage to scampi or traditional fish and chips.

Karen Shepherd, Registered Manager for Elmhurst said they all had a great time.

She said: “Our residents really enjoyed the visit from the chippy van recently. It was great for them to be able to pick their favourite treats and have a taste of normality.

“Thank you to The Old Smithy van and the staff on duty for arranging this.

“One of our residents, Mr Fitzpatrick really enjoys fish and chips and he went out for them every Friday with his family prior to COVID, he always says ‘you can’t beat fish and chips from a chip shop’ , so this was a great compromise.

“The staff on the chippy van were really friendly with the residents, chatting to them whilst making up the orders and our residents remarked on how lovely the smell was coming from the van as the chips were cooking. We are looking forward to doing it again!”

The Old Smithy fish and chip shop in Leece Lane, Roose expanded their business by opening a takeaway which operates out of a Citroen HY 1955 van in October last year.

Known as 'The Smithy Van', the vehicle was converted last year to serve up fish and chip shop favourites like sausages, scampi and fish cakes whilst on wheels.

The van has proved 'hugely popular' since launching attending schools, care homes and businesses feeding the community fresh fish and chips.

Last year the van stopped by to give struggling residents at Egreton court, Barrow Island a free meal after a Ulverston coal merchant got in touch with them to offer a helping hand.
