PUPILS from Yarlside School at Barrow visited Barrow Lifeboat Station in 1989 as part of a classroom project.

They took turns to sit in the helmsman’s position on the lifeboat, the James Bibby, and peered into every nook and cranny before reluctantly going back to their classrooms and desks.

The children were accompanied by their form teacher Sue Dawson, the school’s head David Jackson and a number of parents.

The youngsters did not arrive at the lifeboat station empty handed.

They were able to hand over £14 they had collected towards lifeboat funds.

In 1995 pupils at Yarlside School had audiences rolling in the aisles when they performed a special production of the pantomime Cinderella.

All 207 pupils were involved in the play, Cinders, either acting on stage, singing in the choir or working behind the scenes.

And there was a modern twist to the traditional fairy-tale ending. Cinders found true love with Buttons - and Prince Charming ended up with one of the Ugly Sisters.

Headteacher Barbara Lowes said: “It’s been a great success and an absolute sell-out.

“We’ve had some wonderful comments from parents.

"They thoroughly enjoyed the show, particularly the audience participation sequences.

“None of the children seemed at all nervous - they tackled the comedy elements really well.

“We think we’ve got some stars of the future who should go on and join amateur dramatic clubs.”
