THE shipyard is actively encouraging women to think about craft trade apprenticeships.

BAE Systems' Submarines Academy for Skills and Knowledge (SASK) is the perfect place to launch a rewarding career.

As part of a trade-up event, a group of young women were invited to find out more about trades like Welding, Steelwork and Caulking.

16 people, all from the Barrow and Furness area, took up the opportunity.

Phil Athersmith, head of early careers delivery at BAE Systems Submarines, said craft trade roles are open to all, regardless of gender.

He said: "We have some excellent apprentices working in our craft trades.

"Modern technology and working practices mean craft trade roles really are open to all, regardless of gender.

"Our business prides itself on providing a modern workplace with diversity and inclusion embedded in everything we do.

"I'd certainly encourage women to look at the career opportunities on offer in Barrow helping to build submarines for our Royal Navy."
