Three in five people aged 50 and over in Barrow have received a Covid booster, new figures suggest.

NHS England data, published for the first time, shows 17,507 people aged 50 and over in Barrow had received a booster jab or third vaccine dose by November 21.

That is at least 59 per cent of the age group, based on the number of people on the National Immunisation Management Service.

The figures show that by November 21 in Barrow:

1,356 people aged between 50 and 54 had received a booster jab or third vaccine dose – 26 per cent of the age group

1,756 people aged between 55 and 59 had an extra dose – 33 per cent

As had 1,911 people aged between 60 and 64 – 41 per cent

2,942 people aged between 65 and 69 – 76 per cent

3,563 people aged between 70 and 74 – 88 per cent

2,767 people aged between 75 and 79 – 90 per cent

And 3,212 people aged 80 and over – 88 per cent

On Tuesday during a coronavirus conference, Prime Minister Boris Johnson promised that everyone eligible in England aged 18 and over will be offered a Covid booster jab by the end of January, with at least 400 military personnel helping the NHS, and vaccination centres "popping up like Christmas trees".

Following advice from the Joint Committee for Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI), everyone who is currently eligible - including those aged 40 and over, health and social care workers and those at increased risk from the virus due to health conditions - will be able to book their jab from three months after their second dose, meaning an additional seven million people over 40 are now eligible.

The government and the NHS are urging younger people to wait until they are called forward by the NHS.

Younger age groups will be invited by the NHS in order of age, grouped into five-year age bands.
