It’s the confirmation we’ve all been waiting for - the cublet Red Panda is a healthy, adorable little boy and he weighed in at his healthcheck yesterday at a chunky 1.63kg and now proudly sports his identification microchip.

Over in penguins, the plucky penguin we told you about a couple of weeks back is doing amazing.

He has gained over 1kg so far - which in penguin terms pops him back right into the middle of the ideal weight range for Humboldt penguin.

Keepers have a full regime for this plucky one with daily medication and administering his nebuliser - and he’s definitely feeling better as we can see both our bird boys being evaded on a daily basis as he gives them the slip and flops into the pond.

Sticking with birds, and the news that once again avian flu has a grip on the UK with sadly reports as close to the zoo perimeter as Silecroft.

In a proactive response we have implemented very stringent controls - an outbreak on-site would be devastating to all our resident birds.

Keepers have extra protocols relating to footwear, PPE, enhanced cleaning regimes and visitors will find some changes - from foot baths and foot mats, closure of some areas and restrictions on the availability of animal contact hand feedings.

We ask visitors to please follow the rules and help us protect our flappy friends.
