Online reviewer Carol said: "A delightful two night stay in this grand hotel. All staff super friendly and welcoming. The stately dining room has lovely views across the hotel grounds and the bay. A great choice of food served at both breakfast and dinner. Loved the festive decorations."

2) Abbey House Hotel

Barrow's Abbey Road hotel that has recently undergone a multimillion refurbishment has never failed to provide guests the highest quality service.

Best known for its cleanliness, value and service, the highly rated hotel also holds a 4.5 rating on TripAdvisor.

Former guest, Jennifer said: "My sister has recently had the pleasure of getting married at the Abbey House, it was the most perfect day. I stayed for the night before and night of the wedding. Ten of us had an evening meal we were seated in the garden room which was great as we were quite nosey so didn't disturb the other diners with our laughter. All the food was delicious. My sister and some of her bridesmaids had the summer suite which was spacious and exactly what she wanted."

3) The Duke of Edinburgh Hotel

Known as one of the town's most famous hotels, the Duke was reinvented in 2006 into a fifty one en-suite rooms, stylish cask ale bar, resident's dining lounge, stunning cocktail and restaurant cellar bar.

With a 4.5 rating on TripAdvisor, the iconic hotel is one of the most popular choices for tourists in Cumbria.

Online reviewer Ian said: "Having arrived here on Sunday this now being my 3rd night what a fantastic place train station very close and bus stop which I used today to get to lake Windermere one hour away just a few 100 yards on opposite side food is fantastic I have had outstanding meals, breakfast is superb, real ales are spot on as well as keg ales lovely bar, friendly staff, room is lovely, ironing board, tea and coffee facilities, biscuits, excellent phone charger points next to the bed, and a lovely comfy bed."

4) The Daffodil Hotel & Spa

Located on the shores of Grasmere Water, the hotel and spa is located in a key location for the Lake District which has gone a long way to build its reputation as one of the area’s most popular choices.

The hotel reopened in July 2012 after a major redevelopment which created 78 new bedrooms including 14 luxury Suites, a Spa with thermal suite, extensive function rooms and a lake facing restaurant.

Reviewer Connor said: "Having we became parents seven months ago, we needed our first child free break, and the daffodil and Grasmere was the ideal place. The hotel was clean, the bed was comfy, only slight gripe was I thought the menu was very limited, the food I did get was lovely though. We were lucky with the weather, bright skies cold and crisp, so it was a lovely walk in to the nearby village, and we had a great day in the other bars in the village to."

5) Macdonald Old England Hotel & Spa

The hotel and spa is one of Windermere's most popular businesses and has earned four stars for its service.

With an incredible view over Lake Windermere, the hotel has proven especially popular among families.

Online reviewer Sandra said: "We had an overnight spa break and from the minute we walked through the door, the staff in the hotel and in the Spa were all very friendly and efficient. The treatments were brilliant and the evening meal was amazing. Even though we are local to Windermere, we will definitely return."
