BARROW'S Viking invasion is offering the public a fun pre-Christmas event with the help of Barra Culture.
The local creative organisation is hosting #AFurnessYule, recognising the town’s Viking origins and providing an alternative to traditional festive celebrations.
#AFurnessYule, sponsored by BAE Systems, takes place in Barrow’s town centre on Saturdays, November 27 and December 4 culminating in an extravaganza of fire and fun at the Dock Museum on Sunday, December 5.
Families can help artist Tom Mortlock-Jackson make a huge Yule Goat, a traditional Scandinavian symbol of seasonal festivities. Hundreds are still made across the Nordic countries in celebration of winter, and the people of Barrow will be able to contribute towards this giant piece of local art.
n November 27, workshop leaders from Carlisle’s Tullie House will help young people learn about Viking history with fun and interactive activities.
On December 4 and 5, acclaimed outdoor theatre company Highly Sprung will showcase their latest piece - the Flying Goddess - specifically created for Barrow.
The finale of #AFurnessYule on December 5 sees a life-sized Viking ship crewed by Vikings land-moored outside the Dock Museum, ready to show what life was like on board the longboats.
