BRASS bands, Donald Ducks, teddy bears and silent Scouts were involved in a massive south Cumbrian effort for Children in Need in 1989.

BBR Radio Furness was a major focus for the local fundraising and also ran an on-air auction for the cause.

Fundraisers included Dalton Church Scout Group, which raised more than £200 with a sponsored silence.

About 25 cubs and Beavers took part and one beaver, who could not make it to the scout hut for the event, had his own sponsored silence at home, said organiser Sue Sylvester.

Children from Yarlside School raised £273 when they and their teachers all took teddy bears to school for a 20p fee.

Other fundraising events at the school included a collection of 1p coins.

At Haverigg Workingmen’s Club a competition night raised £745 and a sponsored pub crawl netted a further £1,470.

Dowdales School brass band, accompanied by teacher Kath McCullough, played for 40 minutes in Market Street, Dalton, and raised £61.50.

In the afternoon the 18 pupils were joined by the school’s head of music Peter Dyer to do the same at the Market Cross, Ulverston, where £63.50 was collected.

The deputy manageress of the Little Chef restaurant at Witherslack, Beverley Nicholls, 29, of Yealand, climbed the 40-feet-high mobile climbing wall on the Radio One Quizmobile and raised £120.

“She’s never climbed higher that a chair before - she is really scared of heights.

She was really brave,” said a restaurant spokesperson. Other events at the Little Chef were organised and the money is still being counted.

The Crofters Inn at Holbeck, Barrow, organised a vicar and tarts party, which raised £100.

There were speed pool and darts competitions organised by manager Anne Cowburn and her staff and two gallons of beer was given away in raffles and games.

Staff at Chas Kendall's Dalton Road bookmakers wore fancy dress and went on a pub crawl after their day's work, raising £540.

Barrow's B and Q do-it-yourself store raised £1,154.16 when staff wore fancy dress and collected money.

Marion Roberson of Careful Cleaning Contractors of Grange gave her staff the day off and 11 of them collected nearly £400 from the businesses they clean for.

Ulverston's Jigsaw shop raised £377 after an appeal for volunteers to wear a Donald Duck costume.
