PUPILS from Grange C of E Primary School were among the first in the country to receive their initial certificates in the St John Ambulance ‘Three Cross’ award in 1987.

The children, all of Class 3, had to learn various aspects of accident aid, including bandaging, stretcher carrying and how to put someone in the recovery position.

Children from Cartmel CE Primary School were runners up in the St Ivel Vitalite National Schools’ Vitality Competition in 1998.

The school was chosen from more than 200 schools nationwide for its outstanding efforts in promoting energy and positive attitudes throughout the school and local community.

Pupils enjoyed taking a walk on the wild side at Coniston CE Primary School in 2007. Newts, water scorpions and Natterjack toads were all favourite finds among the adventurous children.

Youngsters were keen explorers.

They worked with the National Trust to study their environment through visits to Tarn Hows, woodlands and beaches.

They also took part in a popular wildlife club at the school pond and gardens.

The three to 11 school had received the prestigious Artsmark Gold award in June that year.

There was extensive work in the creative arts, from the nursery through to Year Six.

Children enjoyed playing musical instruments and experimenting with the styles of artists such as impressionist Claude Monet, or the works of John Ruskin, who lived in Coniston until his death on 1900.

Headteacher Steven Jackson said: "This school is about broadening horizons. We introduce the children to the arts and the environment, not just locally either. We have just started a project with schools in Ghana and South Africa."

Mr Jackson said: "It's a happy school and we have close working relationships.

"I'm proud of the children and staff and the way everyone works hard and gives extra."
