A FAMILY has been welcomed to Barrow after fleeing Afghanistan following a coup.

The family are among hundreds who have been resettled by the UK Government after the Taliban offensive followed the withdrawal of US and allied troops from the troubled Asian country.

And now Furness Refugee Support has issued an urgent plea to raise money for them - with more expected in the near future.

A spokesman said: "We recently had a family arrive from Afghanistan with literally nothing - they didn't even have warm clothes.

The group is urging people to support a music night to raise money for the refugees.

The music night, on Friday October 29, includes music by four acts: all-women group Zoleka, Kathryn Bell, Karen Bell and duo Mickey Finn, as well as a quiz.

Smileplease said: "Try and look outside the box - these people were facing death each day."

Lara999 said: "Welcome to Barrow. I am so pleased you have been able to escape the nightmare of Afghanistan and all its threats and terrors. I know you will make a great contribution to this community."

Easy as said: "Many countries around the world take refugees and the UK has a legal obligation to do so also. In reality, compared with other countries we do very little to help.

"Where's the humanity?"

Billy Boson agreed: "The U.K. are exceptionally stingy in taking on refugees, 14th place in Europe in terms of numbers."

Barrow cat said: "There were a lot of refugees who stepped up and given the right to work during the pandemic to cover the extra cleaning hospitals needed and other staff shortages. Also to cover the shortage of carers for elderly and disabled. I know where my son lives in sheltered housing would struggle for staff without immigrants."
