DUDDON and High Furness District Scouts celebrated St George’s day at a special ceremony at Furness Abbey on Sunday, April 20 1997.

Scouts from 1st Grange and Cartmel, 1st and 6th Duddon, 1st Pennington and 6th Ulverston all met at the Abbey for prayers and Renewal of Promises.

The Millom District Scout annual general meeting included a host of awards and badges for youngsters in 1997.

Under the heading ‘Rewards for the youngsters’ efforts’, The Mail reported that the John Bell trophy, awarded for endeavour, went to Christopher Ogden for his “courage and determination which has been an inspiration to others in scouting”.

The Millom District Badge Design Competition went to Naomi Waugh, Jamie Kershaw, Alexander Morris and Philip Harkins, with the overall winner being Colin Clayton.

The prizes were awarded by the district chairman, the Rev David Dixon.

In 2007 Scouts in the South Cumbria area celebrated 100 years of being prepared with an action-packed camp.

More than 100 scouts, cubs and beavers welcomed the country’s deputy chief scout, Peter Nichol, to the special camp at John Ruskin School at Coniston.

The youngsters from the Duddon and High Furness district took part in activities such as canoeing, hiking, riding on zip lines and climbing, and they went on a trail around Coniston.

Some keen adventurers got up at 3am to climb part way up the Old Man of Coniston to see the sunrise.

Deputy chief scout Peter Nichol dropped in to join in with singing around the campfire.

The event was one of 150 camps that were held simultaneously around the country over the May Bank Holiday weekend.

The area's district commissioner, Elizabeth Hall said: "There was fun all round at the district camp.

"It was a pleasure to see so many well-mannered and well-behaved young people having a good time and working together."
